Zipper and Hardware Inspection
Zippers are critical jacket components. Main zipper should appear properly installed and functional. Check zipper brand if specified. Pocket zippers should be the correct style. Snaps and buttons should be securely attached with even spacing. Velcro closures should be clean and properly sewn. Hardware finish should be consistent and free of scratches or discoloration.
Insulation Quality
For insulated jackets, fill distribution is the most important QC factor. Down or synthetic fill should be evenly distributed throughout the jacket without empty patches. The jacket should have reasonable loft consistent with its advertised warmth level. Uneven insulation creates cold spots and affects appearance. Check fill distribution from multiple angles in QC photos.
Seam Construction
Jacket seams endure significant stress and require quality construction. All seams should be straight and even. Seam taping should be present and properly applied for water-resistant jackets. Stress points like shoulder seams and armhole attachment should have reinforced stitching. Loose threads at seams may indicate potential weak points.
Lining and Interior
Jacket lining should be properly installed without bunching, pulling, or loose areas. Interior pockets should be correctly positioned and securely sewn. The lining material should be consistent with the product description. For jackets with removable liners, check that attachment points like zippers or snaps are properly installed.
Sizing and Fit Verification
Jacket sizing is more complex than other clothing due to layering considerations. Key measurements include chest width, body length, sleeve length, and shoulder width. If you plan to layer under the jacket, ensure measurements allow for additional bulk. Compare QC measurements against a well-fitting jacket you already own for the most reliable size assessment.
